A Way to Preserve Mobility

Gaitkeeping is a methodology early to mid-stage people with Parkinson’s can use to better coordinate their walk, and prolong their independence. Developed by long-time PwP and movement coach Pamela Quinn, it teaches people how to analyze their gait in the context of PD, and how to use a progression of movement strategies to regain and maintain physical confidence.

Why Gaitkeeping

By helping you make small adjustments in your gait in the short-term,
in the long-term Gaitkeeping aims to give you…

Built On
Real Experience

For over 15 years Pamela Quinn has been helping people with Parkinson’s achieve greater mobility through group classes, one-on-one instruction, and large scale dance performances. For over 25 years she has been living with the disease herself. Gaitkeeping is her attempt to synthesize her professional and personal experience into a single program to help PwPs preserve the most essential component of their independence: their walk.

Two Phases

  • Step #1: Take Gaitkeeping Online

Take the Gaitkeeping online course (1.5-2 hrs) and learn how to analyze your walk, and integrate a progression of movement strategies into your daily life to enhance coordination and mobility.

  • Step #2: Put It Into Practice

Practice what you learn as you walk around your neighborhood, to the grocery store, or anywhere else. Use the Gaitkeeping app (optional) to discover guided walks and music that help you further fortify good walking form.

FAQ

  • Gaitkeeping is for people with Parkinson’s who can walk without aid (i.e. without a cane or walker). Gaitkeeping focuses on empowering these PwPs to identify and manage errant walking patterns, and reinforce healthy ones to maintain independence.

Some people who use canes have also benefitted from Gaitkeeping, but the results have been less consistent.

  • The Gaitkeeping course is $120.

The Gaitkeeping app has a free version with guided walks and a limited musical selection or a "premium" version that comes with a subscription to Apple Music. The premium version will allow you to walk to music from the most popular artists and feature a rotating array of musical selections.

An Apple Music subscription is free for one month after which it is $10.99.

Note: If you need financial assistance please email colin@pdmovementlab.com and explain what you can pay. We are committed to making Gaitkeeping accessible to everyone who needs it.

  • Short Answer: Almost everyone reports some benefit from the Gaitkeeping course alone. Using the app will likely help you improve your walk more. If you like walking to music, the app specializes in helping you use music to power your walk.

Long Answer: Across the first fifty people who took just the Gaitkeeping course 90% said they increased their ability to analyze their own walk, 90% reported increased physical confidence, and 94% said they would recommend Gaitkeeping to other PwPs. These numbers are from people after finishing the course alone.

We recorded similar statistics in the official Gaitkeeping clinical trial. However, in the trial we also found that some people were able to immediately apply what they learned in the course to their gait to create large walking improvements, while others needed more guidance to get the full benefit of Gaitkeeping. All participants benefitted from practice and reinforcement.

We built the Gaitkeeping app to make practicing Gaitkeeping easier, and to simplify the process of find good music to power your walk.

  • If you encounter any difficulties using the Gaitkeeping course or app you can email Colin at colin@pdmovementlab.com.

  • We will happily refund you if Gaitkeeping does not help you in a meaningful way. All proceeds from the Gaitkeeping program are reinvested into improving the program.
